Doing Your Homework

The San Diego Union-Tribune (circulation 269,819) on Nov. 28 provided helpful pointers to readers interested in less-invasive cosmetic procedures. An ASPS Member Surgeon conveyed the message that while some of the latest cosmetic treatments don't require surgery, patients still need to seriously consider any procedure – and the physician who would perform it.

"Even though injectables are considered noninvasive, you're still injecting something into the body, and complications can occur. The risk is small, but it's there. That's why it's so important to do your homework. A spa within or near the doctor's office is optimal since medical personnel would be immediately available if problems occur...Doctors in any area of medicine may designate themselves 'cosmetic medicine physicians' but lack the training and experience necessary to achieve optimal aesthetic results. Look for board-certified dermatologists or plastic surgeons."
